This weekend there was a Twin Cities Book Festival in Minneapolis and I was, um… “lucky” enough to have been invited to participate in a local “celebrity” spelling bee. I was flattered to be asked, but had tried to politely decline based on my dependency and addiction to Spell Check… but alas, they said that didn’t matter.

Spelling Bee

So long story short, I showed up and found out I was competing against mostly authors, editors, journalists, and a one-time runner-up in the state spelling bee. Well, it was obvious I was done for from the beginning, but I started to have hope because the first round was handing out fairly easy words such as “wrong” and “balloon,” yet when it came to me I was handed “Discipline.” Ugh, that happens to be one of those words that I can’t ever spell correctly! Not to mention that the whole format of a spelling bee scares me so much that I probably wouldn’t be able to spell my own name had they given it to me.

So sadly, but predictably, I was out in the first round. But, as the saying goes “3rd times the charm” and luckily 2 people went out before it got to me. Look’s like 3’s my magic number. 3rd out in the spelling bee, 3rd auf’d on the runway…

Oh I feel for you Katy, I still cringe when I remember a spelling bee that I flubbed in the fourth grade. The word I had to spell was ‘’bikini’’ and I had a total brain fart and blurted out, ‘’Bikini, B-I-C-I-N-I, Bikini’’. I lost because of a C bikini. Spelling bees are little more than a cruel way to make people feel dumber than they actually are. Bsides, with the internett, it reelly dussn’t matter how well yoo spell az long az peepul can still understand yew. ;)

Ack who cares about spelling, you’ll just sow the letters together

Had to comment as this made me laugh/cringe with a memory as well. I remember a fourth grade spelling bee that this happened to me in, and I’m a great speller and fearsome Scrabble player. The word I had was ‘hydroelectric’, and I spelled it almost correct (minus the first ‘c’), but was kicked off.

The word that won? ‘Spider.’ There is no justice in the world of the spelling bee! :)

You were a very gracious contestant and a real trouper! It takes a lot of self-confidence to agree to a spelling bee when you know you’re going to be competing against writers, journalists, and editors. I know the organizers dealt with a lot of rejection in getting a full roster of participants, so I’m sure you made their day when you agreed to participate.

Thanks Steve! I didn’t know that Spelling Bees could be so entertaining, good job! I really had a good time, even though I totally lost. I think I enjoyed it more than I would have if I had stayed in longer, I just get so nervous!

Next time maybe you could slip me an easier word… or maybe “definitely.” For some reason people seem to have a hard time with that word, but I can always spell it correctly!

That brings back memories to me. In 6th grade I mispelled the word ‘’grotesqueness’’. Seriously, what 6th grader knows how to spell that? I still managed to get third though. If I were you, I probably would have chickened out. That was very polite and brave of you to go. lol

I'm currently loving ...

America's Best Dance Crew 2 While no one this season can compare to the JabbaWockeeZ, I'm still a big fan of this dance show (always wanted to be a dancer!).

Girl Talk "Feed the Animals" Okay... so the first time I saw this guy live, he was a bit of an a**hole to my friends band who opened for him, but I have to let that slide since I'm totally in love with this mix.

Bats for Lashes Saw this music video at the bike film festival this weekend and loved it. So simple and so creepy...

Flickr photos! lots of photos, especially of cats.

Across the Universe I wasn't sold the first time I watched this, but then I couldn't stop thinking about it and now I'm loving it! Definitely gets you in the mood for some Beatles music.

The Office I know... I'm late to the game, but I can't get enough of The Office right now!

Nortec Collective 5 guys on laptops + 1 trumpet + 1 accoridan... Ranks at the top of my list for best live shows ever, right up there with Radiohead and Flaming Lips.
