Episode 8: High Flying Fashion

A “makeover” challenge! I’ve been waiting for one of these. I love to see how the designers would dress themselves or each other (season 2!). I don’t know about other designers, but for me, I have the hardest time dressing myself compared to dressing other people! I’ve been wanting to make something for me to wear to the final runway show, so I’ve decided that this week of my “AUF’d Runway” I’ll make my “jet-setting” outfit the one that I’ll wear to at OFW! Well… unless it totally sucks…

I do have to say that I loved the concept of making them travel to test the outfits, but I think it was pretty crappy to fly them out there, only to send someone home the very next day! I know it makes for some dramatic TV, but that sucks. Oh well. I’m also sad that I didn’t stick around long enough to make it out to Paris, but I think it would have been worse to be the very last one out (Robert) right before they left!

Angela (OUT): I’m sad to say it, but I think Angela was the right “out” this week (Sorry Angela!). I think ultimately it came down to the poor fabrication choice. Had the shorts been made out of a sturdier fabric (twill, denim, etc) I don’t think they would have been much of a problem. They did have lots of “fluerchons” on them, but that’s Angela’s style and the shorts looked well constructed… wrinkled, but well constructed. I think the other problem for Angela might have been the styling of her whole outfit (that’s usually my downfall too…I’m no good with styling!). She didn’t appear too comfortable in those heels, so maybe some cute flats or trainers would have worked better and made the whole outfit a bit more casual. I think there was a bit of confusion in the outfit on whether or not it was casual or dressy. The fabrication of the top and heels made it look dressier, but the shorts and bag were casual. I’m sad to see Angela go, but I’m happy for her because she really stepped it up with the Macy’s win and doing so well in the Icon challenge.

Jeffery (WNNER): Okay, I’ll try to not let this taint my opinion on Jeffery’s design, but I have to get it out of the way first… I’m SO tired of Jeffery’s attitude on the show! Whether or not you thought Angela’s mom was annoying, he needs to get over it and stop talking about it. I felt so bad for Angela having to be there and listen to him talk about the last challenge… and who wouldn’t take that personally if he were talking that way about their mom? Ugh. He reminds me of the kids in High School who were mean to everyone, but in reality they were insecure and really wanted everyone to like them. Anyways, that said, I thought he did a pretty good job on his outfit. I don’t think he should have won (that seat is reserved for Mr. Knight), but I understood his point of view and it looked well made. Personally I don’t think pants that tight would be comfortable on a plane for x-amount of hours, but he seemed to like them. My one complaint would be the crap on the crotch area. Every time I see the photo or the runway, that’s the first place my eye goes and it’s really the last place I want to be looking (although I bet that is exactly what he was going for).

Kayne: Maybe I’m crazy, or maybe I just like Kayne too much, but his outfit didn’t really bother me. Yes it was a little Elvis-y (but when did Elvis become a bad thing?) and yes it was a little costume-y, but so is Kayne (and I don’t mean that badly)! I’m not sure if they made it on the show, but I remember a pair of jeans he had one night that were literally covered in rhinestones! That’s not something your average American would wear, but it’s totally Kayne and they worked on him. I’m telling you this to explain why I thought his crazy “Versace” print shirt worked. It’s over-the-top, costume-y, flamboyant… it’s KAYNE. Did you see the belt buckle? That’s what I’m talking about! I thought the outfit looked nicely made and fit him pretty well. To be honest it ended up not being as crazy as I had expected it to be when I first saw him picking out the fabric. I also thought his story about his outfit worked and was completely him.

Laura: Thank you. Thank you. Thank you Laura! You stepped out of your design “comfort zone” and tried something new… and looked what happened! Your dress was beautiful, elegant and interesting. Thanks again! Okay…seriously now though… I was really happy that Laura tried something new and even as she said, tried not to be boring. While I question traveling SO dressed up (although I guess I can see Laura traveling in 4” heels!), I thought her dress traveled well (no wrinkles) and I can picture the design looking great on all different body types. The wrapping around the middle was constructed (perfectly, no surprises there) in a unique and interesting way, and it looked good knotted in both the back and front. I think that wrapping would also be very flattering on most women. My only complaint would be the color of the dress. I know that it works into Laura’s neutral color palette, but I don’t think it was the most flattering on her skin tone. That said, I’m happy she didn’t make it in black or white and I can’t picture what color I would have put her in… so it’s really a small complaint.

Michael: I thought Michael had the win again in this episode. I was a little nervous about his outfit during the episode because they didn’t show much other than Tim being concerned with it. That scared me a bit, but as soon as Michael strutted his stuff down the runway I knew he was not only safe, but might even win it! The use of seersucker fabric for the cargo pants was genius and you’ll probably see that in stores sometime in the near future! It was (as Michael said) a perfect combination of classic Americana and urban street wear. As always, his construction and fit looked beautiful and his styling was spot on with the little hits of bling. I also thought Michael should have won this episode because his outfit not only looked great after traveling, but it also managed to look both comfortable (something I know I want/need when traveling) and it looked like he could go to a party or event when he got to his destination.

Uli: I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I never ceased to be amazed with how well Uli is able to pair crazy, wild prints together! I’ve also said it before, but I feel like we’ve been seeing the same dress a lot. I thought the judges were a little harsh on Uli this week, but I’m sad to say I do agree with them for the most part. I think the dress was very pretty, but it was a little over the top for traveling in. I can’t really imagine lugging bags through the airport in that, but then again, if you’re a jet setter, you probably aren’t carrying bags? I also agree with M. Kors that I would like to see what else Uli can do. I know she can create amazing party dresses, but can she design other things? Although then the next question would be, does she have to design other things? Those dresses would sell like hot cakes and maybe that’s what her line should revolve around? Who knows… all I know is that I’d like to see something different from Uli, but I’m still very impressed with what she does!

Vincent: I agree with M. Kors that this is a design competition, but I actually liked Vincent’s outfit for this challenge. I think it fit the “challenge” that they were given, which was to design an outfit for themselves as a “jet-setter.” I can perfectly imagine Vincent wearing that to travel in and going to a party or dinner in it afterwards. It was very simple, but not everyone is going to want to travel is some crazy, over-the-top outfit like Jeffery’s. The simplicity fit Vincent’s personal style well. From what I could see, I can’t tell if it was constructed poorly or not (as Nina said). I thought it fit well and looked good on him. I do think it would have been nice to have some more creativity involved, but major designers create “simple” things all the time (Calvin Klein anyone?).

I am so glad you said that about Kayne! I thought they were much too hard on him. His outfit perfectly fit the guidelines for the challenge and his personality. And I was sure Michael had another win. Jeffrey’s out was very original, but not practical. Michael’s could go into production and sell like crazy. I can’t wait to see what you come up with for this challenge!

Love what you are doing here, as my wife said, Kayne was not so much Elvis, as he was Johnny Cash.

I, too, was a bit upset with their comments about Kayne. They asked them to design an outfit for themselves as a jet setter. So their complaints about Angela’s fabric and Uli’s design were legitimate but for all of the other negative comments, they were undeserved. Maybe Nina or Michael Kors wouldn’t wear Kayne’s outfit, but Kayne didn’t design it for them to wear.

I agree with you about Kayne. I loved his outfit. It was soooo him! Very country, glitter, Southern, Dolly Parton, gay urban cowboy. I smiled when he was strutting down the runway like queer Johnny Cash. I can see Kayne going clubbing in this outfit, too. And the bling! was perfect.

I don’t understand why Kayne was ripped for being too costumey, but Jeffrey “The Rock Star” wasn’t. I found Jeff’s penis bling to be far more “ridiculous” than Kayne’s belt buckle.

both my sister and i said the same thing about kayne. i thought it suited him perfectly.

i can’t wait to see your next video. i think it’s great that you’re doing this. :D

I didn’t like Kayne’s so much, but I so believe it was very ‘Kayne’. The belt totally rocked by the way, that added much to the styling in a good way.

Michael’s and Laura’s outfit were great and maybe it’s a good thing Robert got AUF’ed (okay, getting AUF’ed is never good I guess), but I don’t think this challenge was much in his league. He doesn’t really have a barbie figure.

Can’t wait to see what you come up with, let’s see Katherine in full jetset! (although I wonder how you are going to simulate a first class flight to paris)

I thought Kayne’s outiftt was very him, and It was not even that bad. For the first time I liked something Jeff made, but I also hate that crock thing. I hate whne my pants show me off (down there…), and I doubt it was that confertable, but compared to every thing else he made, it looked great. I did not like Michales outfit, the top looked weird, and I was not big on the pants. I am usually a big fan of Angela, but I knew she would be going home. Laura’s dress looked really nice, and I can see it on so many people. I liked Uli’s dress, but I hope she would make something different. MAybe a solid colored pant suit (with a print shirt) to show people what she can do. I dont want to see her go home. My Final three are Uli, Laura and Michle *but I like KAyne too)

Gotta say that this week had some strange outfits. I can’t say I was a big fan of the straps that Micheal put on his pants, but I loved his shirt!
Vincent is crazy but it worked so good for him.
Angela looked awful in every way and I was glad to see her finally go.
And I thought (As much as I love Jeffery) That his outfit was a little feminine and I much would have seen a Navy or something instead of that purple.

I absolutely hate you Katy. The way you criticize the other designers is terrible when apparently the show has decided you can’t do better and aren’t better. You make yourself seem very young and naive which isn’t always a good thing. I also love that you are soaking every second of your project runway exposure for all it’s worth.. best of luck to you in this world & your life .. but try not to be a hypocrite & I assume I’ll be seeing you in the reunion episode

The only problem I had with Kayne’s outfit was that I thought it made him look chunky. In every other outfit I’ve seen him in, he looked very slim, but something about the black outfit made him appear chunkier than usual. I did think it was very Kayne though, but I think if he’d used more color, and not focused so much on black that he might have done better.

I completely agree with the Jeffrey crotch though, I didn’t want to be focusing on that either. My eyes! My eyes! I think your assessment of him is spot on too, meanness inspired by insecurity. His outfit aside from the crotch, was good though.

I had the same thought about Uli too, she only does these great pattern-inspired dresses, but so what? They’re great and she does them well. She’s maybe too specified to win the show, but I think she’ll do great in her little niche.

Poor Angela being kicked out of France. She did manage to make some nice outfits, but it was her time to go, and I am glad that she went over Kayne. I want to see Kayne get his groove back on, he did such great stuff earlier in the season.

Looking forward to seeing what you do for the challenge. Something green I hope! :)

P.S. I suggest you ignore poster Fred above, I don’t think your criticisms of the other designers have been anything but constructive. His nasty comment was quite unnecessary.

Dear Fred,
Sorry to hear you feel that way. In this amazing world, we are all entitled to our opinions, which is exactly what I’m offering up in these recaps. I have not said that I am any better or any worse than any other designer on the show or elsewhere. That is left up to a matter of opinion, which will be different in everyone’s mind.

I also feel that my criticism has for the most part been very positive as well as constructive, which is a much more mature way of giving feedback instead of saying ‘I hate you.’ Just FYI for your future comments.

As for your negativity about me ‘soaking every second of your project runway exposure,’ I think I would be crazy not to be milking this for all it’s worth. I worked my you-know-what off to get where I am and this exposure can only help my career. It would be pretty young & naive of me to not use this to my advantage.

Best of luck to you in this world too. -k

I don’t see how Katy is being hypocritical—at all. There’s a difference between criticism and constructive criticism. She’s been constructive. Besides, she’s entitled to her opinion. Also, just because the show ‘’decided’’ she isn’t ‘’better’’, doesn’t mean that we agree with them. In fact, most of us don’t. That being said, you’re entitled to your opinion.

I love Katy’s commentaries. For the most part she is spot on with the average persons style. Plus she gives enough information that between her comments and the PRW site I can keep up with how it is all shaping up without having to watch the show. Which for me is great.

Fred, you too are entitled to your opinion, though I have to say I think you are way off. Katy’s comments are much better delivered then the judges on the show.

Keep up the good work Katy, looking forward to seeing the next video and what you make for yourself. I think it’s a great idea to make your outfit for OFW.

I pretty much agree with you on Jeff’s outfit. While it’s not something that I would ever wear, it does fit his personality quite well. The one thing about it that really threw me off was the jeweled crotch-deal-thing. It just screamed uncomfortable at me. All in all though I think his outfit was well made and adhered perfectly to the challenge.

Personally, I preferred Mr. Knight’s outfit as it was more akin to something that I would wear, and looked a whole lot more comfortable.

Thanks for sharing your opinion with us, because although I may not always agree with you it’s interesting to look at things from another point of view. Keep em’ coming.

I had no problem whatsoever with Kayne’s outfit. They kept saying it was over the top, ridiculous, or whatever. But aren’t jetsetters over the top and vying for attention?! Almost every human on the planet knows Elvis…that’s some great exposure. I too thought Michael should’ve won, not just because I’m rooting for him all the way. Rather, he was more innovative in the design (peep the rad shirt) and fabric choices. Doesn’t Jeffrey do that rock star look all the time? I also saw that Jeff’s outfit was pretty wrinkled- especially in the pants.
