Episode 5: Iconic Statement
Okay, so somehow I TOTALLY missed writing a recap for this episode? How in the world did that happen? This week has been crazy, that’s my excuse! Oh well… here goes anyways:
As you all know, the challenge was to make a modernized look for a fashion icon. The crazy thing that happened, was they let the models pick both the designer AND the icon. As a designer I would have been sweating bricks with that…but in the world of Project Runway you get used to hitting curve balls.
I can’t really explain it, but in general I was kind of bored with the overall designs this week. Some of them were fantastic and some of them were not so good, but I just wasn’t excited about any of them that much…
Alison: I think Alison had a hard icon to work with. Farrah Fawcett is known mostly for her hairstyle rather than her fashion choices, so I think it would be difficult to figure out what her style is. Alison did a nice job and I liked her dress. It was cute and flirty without being too sexy. Very innocent sexy I think. I liked her color combo of mint and black. I tend to not like black much, but the green gave it some life (although it looked brown on my TV!).
Angela: I was so worried for Angela when I saw that textured fabric she got for her Audrey Hepburn update! It looked so crafty and tacky, not at all like something Audrey would wear, but then I saw the dress she made. Beautiful and perfect for her icon! It was simple (in a Laura silhouette), but still had interesting details and texture from the fabric. I would have gone without the granny circles on the bottom (I like the one at the waist), but even with them it didn’t bother me much. Seems that granny circles are okay when in black!
Bradley (OUT): Aww… poor Bradley. I really liked him and as my boyfriend said “now that you’re out and Bradley’s out, why should I keep watching?” Bradley was SO funny and enjoyable to be around. I’m glad I got to work at the table next to him during the show. Sadly though, I think if the judging is based purely on design (which doesn’t seem to be the case this season), than I think Bradley was the right “Auf” this week. I really like his style of design, but I don’t think Project Runway was the right venue for him. He seemed to be overwhelmed in the situation and couldn’t focus. Maybe he’s just always like that… who knows! His outfit for Cher was pretty bad. I could actually see him getting away with that metallic top if there was something different on the bottom, but those pants were just BAD. I don’t get how the two went together and I’m not sure where the thigh fringe came from! Ugh. I’m sad to see him go. He was the funniest guy!
Jeffery: I really thought Jeffrey would be in the bottom for the mess he made for Madonna. I know Madonna is adventurous and has had some questionable styles throughout her years, but please! Jeffery’s dress looked like a garbage bag dress… or better yet, one of those “duct tape” dresses the weird kids make in High School (no, I’m not being mean, I was friends with those “weird” kids!). It was bad. I can’t say there was anything I liked about it. Maybe it would work for someone who’s going to the Rocky Horror Picture Show? Sorry. I think Jeffery should have been down there with Bradley.
Kayne: Kayne’s Marilyn Monroe dress was BEAUTIFUL! I was expecting some pageant looking dress or something similar to the white halter Marilyn wore, but his dress was modern, sexy, edgy and beautiful! Everything that Marilyn was in her day. I don’t know what else to say about his dress other than he was a close contender to win in my book (and the judges it seemed)!
Laura: ho hum…yawn…wake me up when it’s over! Sorry if that sounds mean. I understand Laura’s style and customer, but I’m bored each week with her. I know she’s fantastic at construction and her style is impeccable, but seriously, let’s get some excitement going on here! While her look fit Katherine Hepburn’s style, it seemed to be something that she might have worn back in the day, not a “modernized” version of her.
Michael (WINNER): Michael’s outfit for Pam Greir was amazing! I share Tim’s concerns with hot pants, but those were some fantastic looking shorts. Less “hot pant” more shorty-shorts in my opinion; hot pants almost always end up looking more like underwear than shorts. I feel like Michael has been short-changed on so many challenges so far (pretty much everyone except for the Ms. USA challenge) and he completely deserved this win! I thought his design was dead on with his icon and perfectly made.
Robert: I hope Robert gets his mojo back! Maybe he’s just been really upset over my auf’ing that he’s lost his focus? Yeah, I bet that’s it! No, seriously though, what happened to you my dear? The Macy’s thing was horrible and this wasn’t that bad, but it definitely wasn’t for Jackie O! Jackie would never wear a rope belt crazy boy! Oh well. I’m glad Robert’s not out and hope he picks it up soon… I like him and Kayne together so much I want them to make it all the way to the end, just so I can laugh at their jokes more!
Uli: Another halter dress? Well… if you’re gonna do the same style over and over again, at least she makes it new and fresh with all the crazy wonderful prints! I thought Uli’s dress for Diana Ross was going to be in the top 3. It fit the style and look of Miz Ross perfectly, while still being fresh and updated. While I am getting a little bored with Uli’s flowy halter dresses, I’m so impressed and jealous of the way she works with prints! It’s not an easy thing to do and she combines these crazy prints all the time that you think are going to look horrible and then they turn out perfect.
Vincent: Oh Vincent, you’re crazy and I love it! I actually didn’t think his outfit for Twiggy was that awful. I’m not a fan of the sleeves and I think brighter, happier colors might have been more fun, but the shape and design didn’t really bother me. I thought it was very graphic/geometric in keeping with the mod theme. And the pockets didn’t bother me nearly as much as they seemed to bother Mr. Kors! I thought he was going to throw a fit. Oh well…I guess it’s good to have him back, I’ve been waiting to hear a “she looks a bit matronly” from the guy who clearly designs for the young and hip…
