Episode 4: Reap What You Sew

Ahh…another team challenge! Kinda glad I missed it (no…not really). The challenge was to design a 3-piece outfit for Macy’s brand I.N.C.

As for a lot of speculation about whether or not there should be team challenges, this is my thought on that… To be able to be judged as “America’s next top designer” you need to be judged not only on your design skill and construction skills, but also for how you work with others and treat coworkers or employees. I don’t know of any professional design jobs where as a designer you are the only person who has input on the final product. For example; in order for something to reach the racks at Target, that design has to go through and be okayed by some 50+ people. Not only does the design team have to give it the go, but also so do the merchants (and there’s A LOT of them), the VP’s, the technical team, sourcing, etc… the list can go on and on. If you don’t have the personality and skills to be able to work with everyone and convince them that this should be in the store, then it’s going nowhere (and this could all be for a tee shirt color!).

That said, on the other hand I understand that Project Runway is a competition and it’s hard to eliminate just one person from a team challenge. So far I think the judging has been leaning towards eliminating the team leaders, which usually makes sense. Personally, I think the judges should be able to watch a bit of the team interaction during the challenge in order to make a good choice on whom in the group should go home.

Angela (WINNER), Michael & Laura: I have to give credit to Angela for lots of reasons this challenge, not only did she win, but I believe she did so by picking the best teammates by far! It was very smart of her to pick both Michael and Laura since it was proven in episode 2 that they work really well together. They also both have fantastic eyes for design and they’re sewing is impeccable. I didn’t really understand Angela’s original sketch and I’m guessing the final product might have been vastly different if she hadn’t picked her teammates or if it was an individual challenge. Now this doesn’t mean I’m taking away credit from her for her win. In fact I think this goes to show what a great team leader she was. She could have easily stuck to her original design, but instead, she chose to listen and work with her teammates ideas, which ended up producing a fantastic outfit and the win.

Bonnie (OUT), Uli & Bradley: Aww…I was sad to see Bonnie go, but the outfit was pretty bad. Her sketch was SO cute, young and hip; I wonder how the translation turned out so wrong on the runway? Maybe Bonnie, Uli and Bradley played a big ol’ game of telephone with the design and that’s what went wrong? I did like the color combo though… I think it was just a matter of the wrong fabric. Maybe some pattern or texture in there and it wouldn’t have been so blah. And to disagree with “Nee-Nah,” I actually liked the idea of the cowl/turtle neck. If you live up here in Minne-SNOW-tah, then you get to appreciate well-designed clothes that can keep you warm! The problem with the shirt was that the rest of it was so dowdy. Maybe the collar would have worked had it been a slimmer cut and not a tunic? Who knows…

Oh yeah, and did I forget to mention how much I love Bradley? I don’t know how well he’ll do in the competition, but he is so f’in cute to watch and I love his sense of humor. I was glad we were next to each other in the workroom.

Keith (KICKED OFF), Alison & Jeffery: What I’m sure you all want to know is my opinion on the “Keith” thing… remember that I am under strict contract… bottom line is he cheated. That’s my opinion. He got what he deserved and whether or not you think he was a good designer, no one should feel bad or pity him. It was VERY clear to us what we could and couldn’t bring and pattern/fashion books were some of the no’s. We actually weren’t allowed to have any books (they took a logic puzzle book away from me…yes, I know I’m a nerd)! Plus the fact that he left for a while…those are all no-no’s in the contract and he should have been kicked off. I was very impressed with Bravo that they handled the situation so well and showed what happens if you think you are above everyone else.

On to the outfit… I really liked the outfit that Alison and Jeffery put together. I think the only reason it didn’t win was because it was probably TOO fashion forward for Macys. I tend to not like skinny pants, but those were pretty hot and fit perfectly. Too do that without a draft to start from and not much time to fit them is very impressive! I also liked the double-layered tank. I thought it was a cool idea to be able to convert it to a dress. Not very wearable for the everyday person, but pretty cool for high fashion!

Robert, Kayne & Vincent: Robert’s design was actually my least favorite in this episode. I didn’t get how the jacket went with the rest of the outfit at all and I didn’t understand the rest of the outfit on it’s own in the first place! The skirt seemed very basic (other than the scandalous slit in the back!) and the top with the faux collar was…uh… basically a dressy “two-fer.” I don’t get it. Then they had the sporty parka, which wasn’t a bad design or construction, but it doesn’t make sense with the rest. Oh well… I’m glad Robert is still in. He’s funny. I can’t wait for him and Kayne to have a comedy hour show together (Hear that guys? It was my idea first! I’ll produce it…).

Katherine, I really hope you do a version of this challenge! I can’t wait to see what you come up with. I became a big fan of yours, watching Project Runway. I posted a link to your blog on mine, so hopefully my fashion nut friends will wander over here and check you out!

Best of luck in life and everything!

I concur with the above comment. You were a joy to watch in the first three episodes.

Hey Katherine, thanks for the review! I really enjoy reading your comments. It’s cool to get your insight on things. I’m looking forward to seeing your next outfit!

I agree about the teamwork thing. I wish they would also take into account the team members and how they perform on the task. The present system tends to penalize the designers who initially had their ideas selected, and makes it too easy for unruly team members to coast through – even with bad or lazy attitudes.

And Angela definitely LUCKED OUT with the awesome combination of Michael and Laura. They have such strong construction skills and impeccable tastes. Thank goodness they convinced her to get rid of all those hideous rossettes! That woman is out of control!

I appreciate your thoughts on Keith. I read some interviews with him and he sounds very angry with the other designers for reporting him. He is unapologetic and seems to believe he is some sort of scapegoat or victim. I feel better now hearing your thoughts. I also listened to Tim’s podcast and I was disgusted to hear about the sketch of the pair of pants on his work station that was identical to a pattern in his book. It’s obvious he had been cheating.

I wonder if you or any of the other auf’ed designers felt you got a raw deal? Honestly, I was hoping that they would bring you or Malan back to replace Keith.

Anyways, it’s always fun to read your journal!

Take care. ;D

Katharine, you make an EXCELLENT point about the judges needing to view the team interaction in order to make a fair evaluation. I hope that someone from Bravo gets that message. The one thing I love about this “reality” show compared to all the rest is that at the end of the day, it really is about the product! Congrats on this site… keep working to make this show work for you. Love ya, mean it.

Wow, I can’t believe how much you agreed with the way I felt about the show last week. I also want you to know i was sad to see you go. Especially over Angela’s nasty skirt thingy! lol I have to say I loved the “simple” green dress. I thought it was beautiful! I wish we could have seen what you would of done for the rest of these compitions. Hope to see your desugns out there some day. (I really hope you do your own Snow Boarders line as I am a boarder myself an would SO buy your stuff.)

I have to agree about the whole Angela thing >>; I think she would’ve dug herself in if she hadn’t had Laura and Michael – no offense to her! But the rosettes that she was planning to put all over it… She goes a little overboard with those things. I like how she was willing to compromise with what Michael and Laura were suggesting though – this episode definitely made me see Angela in a new light.

You weren’t allowed to have any books at all? Or just no fashion or pattern books? Because no books at all seems kind of weirdly strict. What did you guys do in your down time…? I’m asking too many questions, hehe.

Yeah, I always feel badly for the team leaders on the team challenges. Not only were their designs initially chosen to be the best of the bunch, but they also are required to do two jobs – complete their garment and delegate/organize/keep people in line. I think team leaders should be automatically given immunity. Just by having one of the top designs they already beat the rest of the competitors. And too often, if you aren’t a leader, the challenge seems like a freebie if you just listen to your leader and complete your part of the outfit.

I really enjoy your comments on the show! The video you posted is awsome too, especially since the show focuses on the drama between the contestants- its cool to see some of the technical side. And you and Bradley should have a face-off for most adorable.

Katy, we are looking forward to seeing YOUR interpretation of the INC challenge. Are you working on it?

I think my favorite part of this episode was Bradly’s random comments about his beard, and squids, and what-have-you. I was actually a little dissapointed at how anti-climatic Keith getting kicked off was. Bravo built it up so much that I was expecting a little more.

I have to agree with you that although Jeffery and Allison’s outfit was my favorite in terms of pure design I think it would be a harder one to sell in a store.

Keep up the good work, as always it’s fun to hear your take on the different challenges and contestants.

I think what you are doing is a really wonderful idea, so wonderful in fact, that I have been doing the same thing. If you get a chance, have a peek at cloakmaker.livejournal.com I’ll be watching your progress over the next couple of months – it will be interesting to see where you go. Best wishes

Will you be doing more Auf’ds? Please don’t tease us with just one? I need to feel like you’re still on the show, as it broke my heart when you were eliminated. I’m sad Bradley’s gone too, now I only have Michael and Alison to root for. Please do more Auf’d? Pretty please? Here’s a picture of my kittens as a bribe. http://tagworld.com/thimblescratch

YOU CANNOT RESIST THE CUTENESS!

I must admit, that’s a VERY mature way to look at the whole ‘Keith’ thing. Above everything else, it IS a competition. And, just like professional athelets, if you cheat… You lose. The sad thing is that with such talent, he still felt the need to have an edge. Oy… I do admit I wished that they’d bring you back like what happened when someone left Top Chef, but… Ah, well. Either way, your opinion is still the most level-headed opinion on the whole mess that I’ve read so far.

But really, Katherine, it was a little surprising to hear this particular take on Keith now that the AfterElton.com interview with Kayne and Robert is now online, because they seem to be of the impression that you, Malan, and Stacey didn’t take things too well just before Keith’s disappearance.
