Episode 2: Fit for a Queen

The second challenge was to design a dress for Ms. USA to wear in the Ms. Universe pageant. I was very excited because we were told that the Ms. Universe pageant is seen by aprox. 80 million viewers! I was also nervous about it because I don’t have much experience when it comes to evening gowns! With this in mind, I presented the dress that I thought would look best on Tara and fit the description she gave us: something earth tone, something that flowed, modern, elongating, low-backed and not too revealing. I still support my design, but I was happy to NOT be team leader, but not because I didn’t want responsibility…I went into it as a learning experience for me. The chance to work with someone who has a designed a lot more evening gowns in the past is a chance for me to learn about the construction and what goes into it. That said, I still firmly believe had I been team leader that we could have produced a fantastic dress!

Jeffrey & Alison: I was curious to see how this teams dress would end up and saddened by the result. I think if they had more time, their dress could have been stunning with all the pleating. That said, in the end it looked more rumpled and crumpled rather that pleated.

Kayne (WINNER) & Robert: I adore these two and think they are the funniest duo since Lucy and Ethel! I (along with most of the designers) was very happy for Kayne to win because this is his world and his career! No other designer could have benefited more from this win than Kayne. Congrats to you hon!

Keith & Bradley: I think their dress was stunning! It flowed beautifully and I loved the layers of colors. I thought that this was a contender for the win along with Kayne’s. I realize now (after learning more about pageants) that an empire is frowned upon in the pageant world, which I think might have been the reason this team wasn’t in the top 2. I loved it!

Laura & Michael: I thought this teams dress was nice, but a bit boring. It looked to me like a tank dress with a bunch of sequins and it was very close to being white (something Tara said she didn’t want). It was however perfectly constructed and Laura and Michael worked well together.

Malan

Malan (OUT) & Katherine: It was heartbreaking for me to see Malan go and I don’t believe it should have been him. Yes, I do believe that ours was the worst dress on the runway, but we worked really well as a team and according to the judges, teamwork was half the scoring for this challenge. As I said on Runway (and above), I went into this team challenge as an opportunity for learning more about evening wear and for my chance to support Malan as much as I can. I worked my ASS off trying to get that dress finished and regardless of what people are saying about my experience or construction skills, I did the best possible job I could with his design and the time. Malan and I worked well together and had even discussed before the runway what we would say if they made us choose who should go home. I did not sell him out and took responsibility for my part of the team. Yes, it was unfinished and we ran out of time, I can’t deny that, but keep in mind that I had to hand-gather the bodice (per his instructions), not once…but twice! I fully believe that in this case, he needed to step up for his design and his vision, which he did admirably! I still hold out that if one of us had to go home, it shouldn’t have been me. I supported him the best anyone in that room could have.

Uli & Bonnie: I also really liked Uli and Bonnie’s dress! It had some finishing problems, but to be honest, they had a ridiculous amount of layers and yardage to hem! It would have been a challenge for anyone to finish that dress. I thought it was unique with the twisting around the neckline.

Vincent & Angela: I think if you take a step back and really think about this team, you will realize that NEITHER of them worked well with the other and it seems they were doomed from the beginning! I don’t think you can lay blame on one person or the other in this team and it’s impossible to tell how they would have worked had they been paired up with other people. I’m sure if I Vincent had treated me like that I would have given up on trying to help him and I’m sure if Angela had worked with Malan like that it wouldn’t have been pretty! With that out of the way, I didn’t like their dress at all. I thought it was boring and a bit “dressmaker-y.” I don’t know what those things on the shoulder were, but pageant it was not!

I actually liked Malan’s design, and I really didn’t like Vincent’s. I think Malan and your design was at least somewhat original. I don’t know who I would have sent home if I was one of the judges though, it definately wouldn’t be that Katy girl, she’s amazing!

I disagree about Vincent. Even before the teams were chosen, Angela seemed to be looking for someone who knew more than she did. She wanted Kayne for that reason but all she ended up doing was turning him off enough for him not to pick her. That said, I agree, Kayne and Robert’s dress was the best.

So far, you’ve been great on the show, and I thought you handled a tough challenge very admirably—working to realize someone else’s vision, particularly a vision that you don’t share, is rarely easy or satisfying. You handled yourself with great poise, and I think both Vincent and Angela could learn a little something from you! I hope your upbeat attitude remains intact throughout the season, whatever challenges are thrown your way, and I can’t wait to see what else you came up with as the challenges progressed.

The top of Malan’s gown was a beautiful sculpture; however, not so wearable. I was sad to see him go.

HON! I am so rooting for you. As a Rochester, Native I am so excited you got on Project runway, and I hope you take it all girl! I loved your design for the first challange. The garbage bag dress was fresh and fitted well, and the sleaveless hood-ROCKIN! Kevin

Keith and Bradley’s dress looked like a tent. Tara would have been carrying half the fabric from Mood.

Uli did another rope strap like Santino and Chloe from last season (I’m not saying Uli copied). Uli went the path of Santino and made the rope too thick. It overwhelmed the entire design and negated its femininity.

Malan’s dress with that hairstyle made the model look like a cavewoman. However Vincent should have gone, his designs are not attractive or wearable. Wearing a paper bag over your head would be an accessory to all his designs.

Hooray for Kayne and Robert they were a great team!

I think it is really amazing that you keep a journal going while we get to see everyone on television. Most of the time people would just stay quiet. I though you and Malan’s dress was beautiful, though a bit TOO earthy, it really did look part tree bark, but if the challenge was for that you two would have rocked it. I really didn’t like Vincent’s…as all I can say is that it was Vicent’s, from what the viewers saw he seemed to constantly push Angela away…any insight on this?

I love hearing all your opinions and feedback! Please keep them coming.

Citrusy – I thought it was apparent from the show that Vincent was pushing Angela away and was not interested in her help. Again, I’m not saying she’s not at fault for anything, but Vincent wasn’t a team player either!

John Doe – I agree with you on Keith’s dress. I think it was very pretty, but it was a lot of fabric and probably the reason it wasn’t in the top 2.

I just discovered this journal, and I’m really glad you’re keeping it. ^^ It’s nice to see what you think outside of the show, since we don’t always get “everything’ you know?

At any rate, I was very sad to see Malan go. And while his dress design was probably a bit too couture for the pagent world, I think if you guys had more time to work on it and tweek it, the dress would have looked stunning. (Was actually my mother’s favorite dress, and that’s saying something)

As for the others… Laura and Micheal’s was really a prom dress in my eyes, and would have looked good on stage, even if a bit boring. Kieth and Bradly’s I liked very much, but probably would have hidden Tara’s figure when she walked, unlike Uli and Bonnie’s which was waisted lower and had a similar aesthetic appeal. Vincent probably should have just added some pleating or a train in the back and his gown would have looked better.

THis season certainly looks interesting, and ican’t wait to see what you and the others left do!

I thought Malan’s design sketch was fantastic (I didn’t even like him at that point and I was still excited to see what would come of it), but executing it might have just been too much for the time constraints. I thought you guys worked well together, though.

If teamwork was half the points I can’t help feeling like Vincent or Angela should have gone. Vincent was a complete failure at leadership, at least from what we viewers got to see…he kept pushing her off. And Angela just seemed petulant and annoying, although she did at least try to participate once or twice. Although buzzing around Kayne like she was really turned me off—maybe she doesn’t sketch, but he does, and 30 minutes isn’t a long time to come up with a solid design pitch and sketch! Common sense should have told her to say her piece fast (if at all) and leave it be, and that she didn’t makes her seem awfully thoughtless.

Of course, you guys get to see so much more than we do, so it’s hard to know if we’re getting the right sense!

Malan seemed really reeeeeally depressed when he was cut. Is he o.k.? Are you in touch?

We’re rooting for you in my house. We especially like your mountain biking t-shirts, and relate to your whole personal style. So freaking refreshing!

Thanks Karuna! I tend to get a lot of crap for not dressing like a typical fashion girl…but that’s just not me! If you liked the shirts, you should check them out at www.twinsix.com It’s my friends company and they are pretty cool!

wow, i’m glad to have found this site + blog through my burgeoning wikipedia obsession. i just watched the second pr episode and i CRIED so much for malan. the thing that’s really disconcerting about the whole elimination (in relation to previous pr eliminations) was that they allowed santino rice to continue on as long as he did, when his designs were always overembellished and INSANE, but they cut malan straightaway, who has a great design sense and seemed so very gracious. the dress you two put together reminds me a lot of junya watanabe, and i would have thought that ms. garcia and ms. wang would have appreciated that! but pageant queens are patently boring folk, and their runway is not avant garde. i’m pulling for you katy, i wish you the best!

I was sad to see Malan go, and I agree that it was the wrong decision. This task was judged on design and teamwork. I think you and Malan both excelled at the teamwork aspect. Also, Malan’s design concept was hreat, which is why Tara selected it. However, the execution was poor.

In contrast Vincent and Angela failed miserably when it came to teamwork, and also in the execution of Vincent’s design.

Personally, I think Angela should have been Auf-Wiedersehen-ed. She contributed absolutely NOTHING. No design ideas. No hard work. No effort. Only negativity.

At least Malan tried his best.

I was sad to see Malan go too. Maybe the dress would have worked if it had been done in lighter colors.Maybe then it wouldn’t have looked so heavy in the top.

“I did not sell him out and took responsibility for my part of the team.”

I thought you were very honest but fair when the judges asked you who should go. You didn’t seem like a sell out at all and Malan (what a dear…wish he hadn’t been auf’d) backed you up. All in all, you two possessed all the class and poise that Angela and Vincent lacked. I’m really rooting for one of that gruesome twosome to get the auf next ep.

Fashion design seems to be such a self-propelled field—you have to have a really really intense drive to create something to match your own vision. But so far, a number of self-taught people, including Marla and Stacey and now Malan, have crashed and burned based on what seems to be a lack of school-taught or school-reinforced skills, like patternmaking and draping and even time management. Did you feel like the things you learned in school were coming to your assistance big time, or do you think you just managed these challenges using things from inside yourself?

Janet- Good observations, I do think you really need both to make it in this industry as well as Project Runway. I think the biggest helper for me was how I manage stress. I’m fairly good at handling stress and in a time crunch I’m able to work fast and steady, rather then get all nervous and start making mistakes. I adore Malan and don’t mean to put him down, but I feel that he didn’t handle the stress well and that was his biggest hurdle in this challenge. Actually, our lack of hem length was due to a rushed decision on his part and something that could have been avoided. Without the stress, I think the two of us could have made a fantastic dress…but then it wouldn’t be project runway!

Fellow Twin Cities native here. I was very sad to see Malan booted this past week. But I think you did a wonderful job of standing up for your contribution to the project. And I think I was even more surprised by how Malan took responsibility for what happened. You usually see so few people in these kind of reality shows take ownership like that.

Anyways… I am excited to see what happens next.

You have a solid fan base here in Minneapolis, Katy! My friends and relatives are bitterly disappointed that we did not get to see more of the designs that were rejected along with the pitches. We feel that we have learned much about design and fabric watching the first 2 seasons and we would have welcomed the opportunity to discuss the problems/strengths of all the designs. Since the pitch was crucial, as well, that would have been interesting to watch. Why do the producers not extend the episodes to 1 1/2 hours or 2 hours? Surely, there is enough tape?

I just have to note that I’m having so much fun watching. I’m now watching the second episode on NBC (WAY TO GO, you’ve hit primetime Network!). My boyfriend literally asked me, how many times are you going to watch this episode, really? This is the 5th time you’ve watched. What can I say, DVR is great! :) So proud of you!

Hi Katherine!
I agree with you in that you shouldn’t have been auf’ed because of someone else’s design. What I didn’t like about the gown was the color… had it been a lighter tone I think it would’ve been okay.
I hope you keep kickin’ butt on the show, I LOVE what you did for the first challenge.

PS: It nearly broke my heart when your model for the 1st episode, Candance, was eliminated… why on Earth did you pick Amanda instead of her?

Katy, I love your blog!
They are not airing this Proyect Runway season in my country yet, but I will be rooting for you in your blog.
My sister is studying fashion design and I sent her the croquis article. I’m sure she’ll love it, and I’ll use it for my illustrations too.
My best wishes!

Katy, reading your blog is so interesting. Thank you for keeping it. I’m wondering what you mean when you said Vincent’s design was too “dressmaker-y”. I remember Michael Kors using the same expression for a design in (I think) season 2. I’m just curious because I’m a home/hobby sewer and it seems like something I want to avoid.

I also thought the elimination was unfair. I thought Vincent’s dress looked very prom-y or bridesmaid-y…except for the weird shoulders. I applaud Malan for having a unique vision that, though it failed, showed vision and creativity. Because of that dress I really wanted to see what other designs he would come up with in future challenges.
