Top Summer Moment #7: Freelance

One of the things I miss most about working for Target is getting to work on the textile/print design, so I was super excited this summer when Kohl’s contacted me about doing some freelance textile design. It’s a lot of fun working on women’s prints (I always worked on men’s for Target) and it keeps my photoshop/illustrator skills from getting rusty. Typically they either send me bought artwork that needs to be put into repeat for printing, or they send me some inspiration and are looking for an original designed print (those are the most fun). Here’s an example of some stuff I’ve done for them (scaled down a whole lot!):

The complexity is amazing, the colors do make it look a bit old fashioned though.

Thanks! Totally agree about the colors… what I forgot to say above is that for this freelance job, I don’t do any work with the colors. I just make the print and send it over to their designers who then work the colors into their current palette.

Those are super cool! I really like the first one a lot. Think I might have to use it as my new desktop. Keep up the good work.

Very cool, I love the first one. I can’t imagine how tough it must be to make a repeating pattern in Illustrator or Photoshop, I work with them all the time (graphic design), but making the pattern tile properly must be hard!

It can be a bit overwhelming to put something into repeat, but I have always loved problem solving and puzzles, so I try and view it as one big puzzle! I think the trick is to figure out the edges (where it repeats) and then just fill in the center.

I'm currently loving ...

America's Best Dance Crew 2 While no one this season can compare to the JabbaWockeeZ, I'm still a big fan of this dance show (always wanted to be a dancer!).

Girl Talk "Feed the Animals" Okay... so the first time I saw this guy live, he was a bit of an a**hole to my friends band who opened for him, but I have to let that slide since I'm totally in love with this mix.

Bats for Lashes Saw this music video at the bike film festival this weekend and loved it. So simple and so creepy...

Across the Universe I wasn't sold the first time I watched this, but then I couldn't stop thinking about it and now I'm loving it! Definitely gets you in the mood for some Beatles music.

Knit Book; Basics & Beyond I want to make some hats and I use to know how to knit, but need a refresher. This is a great book that covers a lot of info and has TONS of good pictures (great to learn from).

Bamboo Fabric Store I'm trying to move my Spring '08 collection into the green by using organic and/or sustainable fabrics. I found all my new bamboo jersey fabrics here and I'm totally in love with them!

Project Runway 3 DVD I got this for Christmas and am still too scared to watch it! I've heard that I'm shown on the DVD a lot more than I was on the season... eek!
