I design. I bake. I snowboard.

I am currently keeping myself busy by being pastry chef for Hell’s Kitchen in Minneapolis and by taking on freelance design work. Please feel free to contact me if you are looking for a freelance designer or textile designer, but I’m sorry to say that I’m currently not producing any custom garments.

Season 5: Episode 4 “Rings of Glory”

Although I’m not sure of the credibility that Apollo Ono has to judge fashion, I really enjoyed this challenge and the runway looks were better than what we’ve been seeing so far this season (well… better made, not very good at fitting the challenge). I always joke that the way to get through Project Runway is to just make a cute dress every time and Nina will like it, so I really enjoy when they present a challenge that a cute dress is NOT what they want as an end result. I don’t think there’s enough opportunity for the designers to work with sportswear and I like that they crafted a challenge around that.

Goodbye Alex

Sadly, our cat Alex passed away this morning after suffering an unknown injury which lead to a heart attack. X-rays showed that he had an abnormally large heart, so I’m going to say he died of too much love.

Project Runway Season 5 recaps!

I guess I need to start off by apologizing for my very un-speedy timing on these recaps… I just moved and don’t have cable yet (argh!) and on top of that I’m now out East teaching a summer fashion class. The good news is that we have cable here, so after the students go to bed I can steal the TV in the dorms and enjoy!

Season 5: Episode 3 “Bright Lights / Big City”

I’m glad they final gave creative control to the designers this week! The first few episodes are always hard as a designer because they typically start with a few innovative or team challenges and you don’t feel like you can express what you want to do very well. I think it finally showed this week in the quality of designs as well… there were definitely a lot more that I liked this week than the last 2 episodes!

Season 5: Episode 2 “Grass is Always Greener”

I have to say that I was pretty disappointed with this episode… I was really excited for a “green” themed challenge (especially since I switched to organic/sustainable fabric this year), but the eco-friendly aspect seemed like an afterthought and they didn’t really talk about what kinds of fabric can be green and what the benefits of using them are or how you can help (like maybe suggest some green clothing lines?).

Season 5: Episode 1 “Let’s Start From the Beginning”

Project Runway is back and I’m excited! I wasn’t sure what to think when they re-did the same challenge from the first season, but considering that the grocery store challenge was one of my favorites, I think I’m okay with it.

Vote for me! (please!)

I don’t know much about it, but I just entered a design contest on MyItThings.com

You could call this my version of procrastinating on a project I don’t want to start…

Anyways. Please vote for me! I believe the top 10 user picked designers are then in a contest to have their own runway show. There is a panel of judges for the top 10 and who else but Malan is one of them!

I'm currently loving ...

America's Best Dance Crew 2 While no one this season can compare to the JabbaWockeeZ, I'm still a big fan of this dance show (always wanted to be a dancer!).

Girl Talk "Feed the Animals" Okay... so the first time I saw this guy live, he was a bit of an a**hole to my friends band who opened for him, but I have to let that slide since I'm totally in love with this mix.

Bats for Lashes Saw this music video at the bike film festival this weekend and loved it. So simple and so creepy...

Flickr photos! lots of photos, especially of cats.

Across the Universe I wasn't sold the first time I watched this, but then I couldn't stop thinking about it and now I'm loving it! Definitely gets you in the mood for some Beatles music.

The Office I know... I'm late to the game, but I can't get enough of The Office right now!

Nortec Collective 5 guys on laptops + 1 trumpet + 1 accoridan... Ranks at the top of my list for best live shows ever, right up there with Radiohead and Flaming Lips.

Knit Book; Basics & Beyond I want to make some hats and I use to know how to knit, but need a refresher. This is a great book that covers a lot of info and has TONS of good pictures (great to learn from).

Bamboo Fabric Store I'm trying to move my Spring '08 collection into the green by using organic and/or sustainable fabrics. I found all my new bamboo jersey fabrics here and I'm totally in love with them!

Project Runway 3 DVD I got this for Christmas and am still too scared to watch it! I've heard that I'm shown on the DVD a lot more than I was on the season... eek!
